How Construction Companies Are Using Brand Video to Attract Skilled Trades

A brand or recruitment video can make all the difference in how and who you hire, especially as the need drives more competition for the skilled tradespeople looking for work. The construction industry will need to attract an estimated 349,000 net new workers in 2026 to meet demand.

A brand or recruitment video can make all the difference in how and who you hire, especially as the need drives more competition for the skilled tradespeople looking for work.

The construction industry will need to attract an estimated 349,000 net new workers in 2026 to meet demand. That number is expected to rise to 456,000 next year.

Most construction companies promise the same things: competitive pay, good benefits, and steady work.

A good construction recruitment video cuts through the shared promises and connects with prospective employees by showing them the people, equipment, and future that’s behind the open position. It can help candidates understand what they are signing up for and what it means to be a part of your company.

Why Aren’t Traditional Construction Job Ads Working Anymore?

A job ad explains the opening, but it doesn’t explain the company behind it.

Pay range, benefits, location: candidates want that information, but it doesn’t answer their bigger questions, like

  • What’s it like to work there?
  • Will my skills and experience be respected?
  • Is the equipment new and correctly maintained?
  • Can I build a career here, or is it just another job?

Construction companies are fighting for the same skilled workers. If you rely solely on a job ad, someone may choose you because you pay a few dollars more an hour, only to find out your company isn’t what they expected and end up moving on again.

In those cases, everyone loses. You sink more money into recruitment and retention, and the worker ends up frustrated and looking for a place that’s the right fit for their skills and future goals.

You can’t solve every recruitment issue with a video. But you can give people a clearer reason to choose your company for more than the hourly rate.

Job ads explain the opening, but a recruitment video shows the opportunity.

How Can a Recruitment Video Attract the Right Workers?

Most recruitment marketing is built to get you as many applicants as possible.

In construction, that’s rarely the right goal.

Your company needs the right people to see the opportunity. They need to know what the expectations are for the job and decide if they want to be a part of it.

That means your recruitment video has to attract and filter at the same time. It should show what makes the company worth choosing while also giving candidates an honest view of the work.

Because the cost of a bad fit doesn’t stop at recruitment.

“Recruiting is expensive. Training is expensive. Turnover is expensive. But lost opportunity is very expensive,” said Josh Langmade, Founder/Visionary at Media Core.

A new employee might need months of training before they are truly up to speed. If that person leaves because the job isn’t what they expected, your company loses.

When a role stays open, the work slows down. When the wrong hire leaves after a few months, crews get stretched thin. The real cost isn’t just the hiring cycle. It’s the work that never gets done because there simply aren’t enough people on your crew to do it.

Opportunity loss becomes more expensive than anything else in the hiring process.

What Do Skilled Tradespeople Need to See Before They Apply?

Skilled tradespeople need to see three things before they apply: real employees talking honestly about the work, the actual jobsites and equipment they’d be working with, and clear evidence of career progression.

A recruitment video that shows these earns trust. One that relies on leadership talking about culture doesn’t.

Candidates want to hear from the people with boots on the ground, not a corporate message about opportunity. If you want candidates to know they can build a career with your company, show them someone who already has. Veteran employees can explain why they stayed, how they moved through the ranks, and what the company has done for their career. Newer employees can talk about why they joined and, more importantly, why they want to stay. Let leadership paint the vision while the team shows them the opportunity.

The video also needs to show the physical side of the job:

  • Projects and jobsites
  • Equipment and crews
  • Working conditions

This isn’t background footage. It’s a key part of how a candidate decides whether to apply. A skilled worker will notice how equipment is maintained, how the crew interacts, and whether what’s on screen matches the vision you’re painting. Don’t tell candidates you have a great work environment. Show them.

Why Should Safety Be a Part of the Recruitment Story?

For a construction worker, more than in almost any other industry, safety is part of the employment decision. It might also be a part of their family decision. A candidate might focus on pay, equipment, travel, and career growth. Their family wants to know that they’ll be coming home for dinner.

Construction recruitment videos should show safety in practice. Show the PPE. Show the procedures. Let employees explain the expectations.

Candidates know that construction carries risk, and pretending otherwise won’t build trust. Showing them that the company takes their safety seriously does. Workers can tell the difference, and so can their families.

Where Should Construction Companies Use a Recruitment Video?

You can host a recruitment video on a careers page (and should), but that isn’t a recruitment strategy

The video won’t solve your hiring problem if the only people who see it are already on your website. You need to use it across the entire recruitment process, including

  • Careers pages and job listings
  • Pre-interview emails and candidate screenings
  • Local Meta and YouTube campaigns
  • Career fairs and trade shows
  • Onboarding sessions

And the most powerful recruitment tool? Your existing employees. Give them the video, too.

Construction workers know other construction workers. They know former coworkers and people from other crews who are ready for a better opportunity.

If you offer a referral bonus, don’t ask them to share a job ad. Get them to share the video so they can show their network what it’s actually like to work for you.

There is an internal benefit, too. Employees feel proud when they see their work and team well represented on screen. The same video used to recruit new people can help remind the current team what you are building together.

You Don’t Need Every Worker. You Need the Right Ones.

A great recruitment video is not a fix for bad pay, unsafe job sites, or a company that doesn’t value its workers.

But if you are struggling to find good people for a good job, video can help.

Recruitment videos create ROI when they become part of a repeatable hiring system. When they tell the same story to every candidate, give recruiters a useful communication tool, and set expectations from the start, they are a worthy investment.

The construction labor shortage won’t be solved by posting the same job ad in more places. Workers have options. They want to know what they are walking into, who they will be working with, and if this is a future they can commit to.

Show them.
